• 33.4 million people live with HIV/AIDS worldwide in 2008, the vast majority are in low- and middle-income countries.
• An estimated 2.7 million people were newly infected with the virus in 2008.
• About 5.2 million HIV-positive people had access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in low- and middle-income countries at the end of 2009.
